Welcome to Christa McAuliffe's Birds-a-Feather Librarians Session!
How do I help the reluctant reader? Some different suggestions that others are doing to spark interest are:
Purchase 4 Nooks; put two or three popular easy-to-read books that can be put on as many as 7 Nooks. Keep them in library. Students may borrow them during library time, free time, etc. Students don't get to take them home. Teachers may on weekends.
Mrs. Smith chooses one book that she loves and that she thinks the kids will love. Create an iMovie on Mrs. Smith's Pick. She asks the students to pick their favorites. Pick a student or two a month to create their own iMovie (about 2 min. each) on their favorite books. Take about an hour per student to do this!
Have students EACH create a "my favorite book" slide in PPT. Put student's picture on the top of the slide.
Create an iMovie of book trailers of each of the Great Stone Face Books. Have it running continuously during the school day.
Find the reluctant learner. Ask her/him questions about interests, hobbies, etc. Say, "It is my challenge to find you a book!"
